I think that carbines can be a good thing.  Although they only have moderate range, it can greatly extend the range of your pistol ammunition.  I think that a good one to look at is the Hi-Point.  These are inexpensive, and do have some potential for accesories (like hi cap mags).  And the 45 ACP version will possibly be out in Aug of 2010 (only been waiting for 5 years for this).

Its finally here.  Hi-Point finally has the carbine out in .45 ACP.  Sure it won't be long now that someone has the high capacity mags out for it.
